puzzling... if we have no self and are but our consciousness & perceptions ... why does it feel as though its required of us to become 'unconscious' again (in the sense of breaking down our mental perceptions) to see things (including our true selves) as they really are, without biased perception or visual limits?

It feels like so much of a paradox... like needing to do something without needing to do something...?

Greetings Darkwyntr,

You ask such amazing questions!

It's important to remember that nowhere on this site can I ever say anything 'true' about awakening. Our dual language will always create 'things', and in effect, pull us from non-dualism. (Unless we can see language itself with pure observation.)

So it is in no sense a 'truth' that we have no self, and exist only as our perceptions. This is a pointer -- an effort to turn someone's mind from it's usual ruts. If someone was totally convinced that they were only perception, it might be more appropriate (and just as true or false) to show them how they have a 'self'.

Most human minds are in a similar place when it comes to their overall view of the world. For someone like yourself, who describes a feeling of having to become 'unconscious', the regular pointers might not always be appropriate.

At this point it might be helpful to ask yourself what you feel is required from you in order to simply perceive. I often speak of 'doing nothing', because we discover (often after endless trying and effort) that this awareness is quite passive -- it works by itself, and answers all of our questions effortlessly. For some reason, this is almost impossible for us -- our minds have been so conditioned to the idea that some form of effort is required from us for everything.

It's good that you're seeing the paradoxes. Whenever we think something through far enough, we'll end up with a paradox like this. This is one step away from seeing that no thought or concept is capable of capturing 'reality'.

This idea of 'self' is probably the most difficult of all to see clearly. It's great to see you exploring it. Play around with considering what it would really mean if you were only perception. See if you can find out for yourself what this 'self' is that we all feel we have. You're doing some great exploring. And keep in touch to let me know how the explorations go!

Fondly,
Kenton

I was utterly confused by this post. Could you please explain it again? This sense of 'self' which doesn't exist....I don't get it at all.

Hello APA,

Before I launch into trying to explain, let me direct you to another post which might make things more clear. This post approaches the idea from a different vantage.
This post also comes from a different perspective, this time ignoring the idea of 'self' but instead giving us an example of how something that seems very obvious to us can in fact be more in the realm of 'illusion'.

I hope this helps! =)
